Louvre Guided Tour Preview
 "Victory
of Samothrace" Samothrace (island in North Aegean Sea)
Circa 190 BC
For the Greeks, the goddess of Victory (Nike) was a
beautiful young woman endowed with wings. This exceptional
monument, raised upon the isle of Samothrace, set in a niche
overlooking the sanctuary of the Great Gods, celebrates
success at sea. The goddess stands on the prow of a galley,
resisting the gusty storm, her right arm undoubtedly held
high. It was an ex-voto of the Rhodians for a victory won at
the beginning of the 2nd century BC: the attitude and the
animated draping prefigure the reliefs for the altar of
Pergamum.
"Venus de Milo" Melos (the Cyclades islands) Circa 100 BC
In spite of lacking attributes, the size and the
attitude of this statue allow its identification as a
goddess: Aphrodite, often represented half nude, or
Amphitrite, goddess of the sea, venerated on the island of
Melos. The style is characteristic of the late Hellenistic
period, which revives classical themes while innovating.
Thus the slipping drapery on the hips entails a closed
stance and introduces an instancy to the figure. It hides
the joint between the two blocks of marble that were
sculpted separately, as were the left arm and leg, according
to an utterly new technique.
The Mona Lisa (1479 - d. before 1550) also known as La Gioconda 1503-1506
If Vasari is correct, the portrait which Leonardo took to
France, that was acquired by François I, was of the Mona
Lisa, who in 1495 married Francesco di Bartolomeo di Zanoli
del Giocondo. The title "La Gioconda" would thus derive from
this notable Florentine's surname. But in Italian "gioconda"
also means a light-hearted woman. With a lasting effect on
Italian art, this portrait stood for an ideal. The smile
that gives her life is, however, a feature of many of
Leonardo's figures. Several scholars have concluded that the
portrait was worked on over a long period, starting around
(1505-1506 in Florence, and it was finished during the
course of Leonardo's peregrinations in Milan or Rome.

Versailles & Giverny
After picking you up at the doorstep of your downtown
hotel in Paris, our guide will take you for a wonderful
day outside of Paris. During this day you will be driven
to Versailles Palace, residence of the Sun King,
Louis XIV. There, you will discover the famous "A la Francaise" gardens, as well as the
Grand Trianon and The Petit Trianon with Marie Antoinette's Hamlet.
Unguided visit for about an hour of the great
apartments, the Hall of Mirrors, and the Queen's appartments.
This day will also lead you to the edge of Normandy,
where you will visit Claude Monet's home, the
"Father of Impressionism". Discover the famous
gardens created by the impressionist painter, and
the well known Japanese bridge in the midst of
its flowered paths and wather-lily ponds.
"Claude Monet's property at Giverny, left by his son to
the Académie des Beaux-arts in 1966, has, after
completion of large scale restoration work, become the
Claude Monet Foundation, inaugurated in 1980. The house,
with its pink crushed brick façade, where the leader of
the Impressionist School lived from 1883 to 1926, once
again has its colourful décor and intimate charin of
former times. The precious collection of Japanese
engravings is displayed in several rooms, hung in
the marmer chosen by the master of Giverny himself.
The huge Nymphéas studio, a stone's throw from the house, has
also been restored. It contains the Foundation's Shop.
The gardens have been replanted as they once were and
offer for the admiration of visitors the "painting from
nature" which Claude Monet's contemporaries considered
one of his masterpieces. The rectangular Clos Normand,
with archways of climbing plants entwined around
brilliantly coloured shrubs, lies before the house and
studios, offering from Spring to Autumn the palette of
varying colours to the painter-gardner who was "ecstatic
about flowers". Lastly, the Water Garden, formed
by a tributary of the Epte, lies further away, shaded by
weeping willows. With its famous Japanese Bridge,
its wistarias, azaleas and its pond, it has once more
become that casket of sky and water which inspired the
pictorial universe of the water lilies."

Feedback:
I just wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed your
tours! The day at Giverny was especially nice. The
picnic by the Epte river was absolutely splendid! What a
great idea----very relaxing and kinda like the old
painter's picnics. Laurent was especially knowledgeable
and personable. Thank him for us please. We hope to see
you again in Paris over the upcoming years! --Michelle.
I wanted to compliment your company and especially
François, who was our guide on August 30 to Versailles
and Giverny. We had a party of six and Francois made our
trip most enjoyable. He was knowledgeable, charming,
courteous, helpful and a font of information about both
sites. We will certainly tell our friends about the
great trip that you provided which made our visit to
France a memorable experience. Please convey our
appreciation to François. -- John

Fontainebleau
Castle - The castle
was built from 16th until the 18th century. In
the 16th century, Francois I transformed
the castle into a Renaissance palace
decorated by Florentine artists. The castle was
made into a national museum since 1870.
Outside, visit the "cour du
Cheval-Blanc" with the statue of Marcus
Aurelius and the famous monumental horseshoe
shaped stairway. Inside, visit of the
"Grands appartements", François I's
gallery and the Renaissance Halls,
Napoleon I's room. You can also visit the
museum of Napoleon I. Don't forget to
take a stroll through the gardens.
Barbizon
-
At the beginning of the 19th
century, Barbizon was a small hamlet of
peasants.
It
was around the middle of the 19th century that
Barbizon truly gained its letters of nobility
when settled Theodore Rousseau and
Jean-François Millet who fleeted Paris with
his family where prevailed an epidemic of
cholera. Barbizon counted at this time famous
residents such Paul Huet, Diaz Of Pena, Cabat,
French Louis, Daubigny, Decamps, Chintreuil or
Dauimier...
The creative current which emerged from this
place gave immortal Artworks such as " The
Angelus " or " Les Glaneuses ". In
their work "Solomon Lever " in 1967, the
Goncourt brothers, in addition inhabitants of
the place, describe the atmosphere and the life
of the village at the time. The character of the
Crescent painter is moreover non-openly inspired
by the painter Jean-François Millet.

Loire Valley Castles : The King's Road
You will be chauffeured by our driver-guide to a
wonderful day in the Loire Valley. Discover
famous castles and gardens of the
Renaissance:
CHAMBORD
This marvelous chateau began its construction under
Francois I in 1519 and was completed until much
later by Henri II, Charles IX and Henri III. 1800 - 2000
men worked on the construction during Francois I. Though
this castle went through many owners, nobody actually
made this place a permanent resident. Francois I himself
lived in this place for 6 months. It was mainly used by
the kings as for retreat or as a hunting lodge. There
are no official records as to who the architect was.
Legend has it that Leonardo da Vinci, then living at the
Clos Lucé in Amboise, made several plans and models used
for the construction of the chateau. It also has an
extremely close tie to some of the projects by Domenico
da Cortona, and Italian architect. During the reign of
Louis XIV, the famous play by Moliere, Monsieur de
Pourceaugnac and Le bourgeois Gentilhomme were
first produced here.

AMBOISE
- The cradle of the Renaissance
One of the first truly "royal" residences of its
kind, chateau Amboise was built during the 15th and the
16th centuries on the orders of Charles VIII, Louis XII
and François 1. Following in the footsteps of the great
kings of France, you will discover a magnificent
example of Gothic and Renaissance architecture.
Today, the Chateau still houses an exceptional
collection of furniture which has been admirably
preserved.

CHENONCEAU
- The ladies Castle
By building chateau Chenonceau on the Cher river in the
1513, Thomas Bohier razed the castle-keep and the
FORTIFIED MILL of the Marques family only keeping the
dungeon. It is sad that he never managed to see the
finished castle and was completed by his wife and son.
Later, it became crown property. Henri II offered this
castle to his favourite, Diane de Poitiers. She
then decided to have a bridge built, linking the
castle to the right bank of the river. This was done by
Philibert de l'Orne, the resident achitect.
Following
the death of Henri II, Catherine de Medicis took
over the ruling and forced Diane de Poitieirs to return
the chateau Chenonceau to crown. During her reign and as
the Queen mother, Catherine commissioned a great
gallery to be built on the bridge.
