Full day Private Tour of World War I Sites
Duration of tour: 12 hours including lunch and driving time.
The
north of France is known the world over for its World War 1 battlefields and
historic war remnants.
Option 1: British/Canadian/South African Remembrance Trail

Your driver guide will pick you up at your hotel in Paris and take you to visit
the main WWI battle sites and Memorials.
Here is a suggested itinerary: please let us know if you wish to add a
particular site.
Albert:
The town of Albert was home to a British garrison during WWI. That was where
soldiers set out to attack German lines. The Somme saw one of that war's
bloodiest battles on July 1, 1916: 58,000 men were killed or disabled that day.
The medieval galleries were put back into use. The last attempt to evict German
troops from the town came in 1918, when British blanket bombing razed the town.
The Somme Trench Museum (Musée Somme 1916) in Albert casts light on the lives of
soldiers in the trenches - and on the July 1, 1916 French-English offensive.
Beaumont-Hamel:
The well-preserved trench system, the only one of its kind still existent in the
Somme, gives a vivid impression of the events of the opening days of battle.
Longueval:
Longueval and Delville wood, for the South African Memorial Museum, cemetery and
visitor centre, commemorating the intense action of the South African troops in
Delville Wood, known to the British Army as “Devil’s Wood”.
Thiepval:
The small village of Thiepval has the great Memorial of the Missing (the names
of men who died in the fighting in this area and whose bodies have never been
identified).
Peronne:
Peronne was occupied by German troops until early in 1917, and again during the
great German advance in 1918. Mont Saint Quentin, a hill on the edge of the
town, was recaptured by Australian troops in 1918.
After this memorable and moving tour you will be driven back to Paris to your
hotel.
Option 2: American Remembrance Trail
The driver guide will pick you up at your hotel in Paris and take you to visit
the main WWI battle sites and Memorials.
Here
is a suggested itinerary: please let us know if you wish to add a particular
site.
“Le Chemin des Dames” (the Ladies Trail)
During the First World War the “Chemin Des Dames” lay in the part of the Western
Front held by French armies. Its position made it the scene of several bloody
battles between 1914 and 1918. The German army went on the defensive on this
ridge in September 1914, stopping the advancing Allied armies after the Battle
of the Marne. After intensive fighting, Germans took control of the plateau in
November 1914. You will visit the Museum of the Ladies Trail and visit the
Dragon’s cave.
Then
you will have time to stop for lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch you will
visit:
Fere
en Tardenois and Château Thierry: Belleau Wood/Memorial of the Côte 204
On the very spot where this cemetery was built, the Americans stopped the German
thrust during the summer of 1918. With 2,289 graves and its commemorative
chapel, Belleau Wood has been converted into a memorial dedicated to all
Americans who fought there during the First World War.
Today the Wood remains a shrine, where some artillery weapons are a grim
reminder of the violent fights that took place there.
In the American Military Cemetery covering 15 hectares (about 6 square miles)
are laid 6,012 graves . Most of the soldiers resting there belonged to the
Rainbow Division (42nd Infantry) and were killed during the fighting on the Ourcq sector and the river Oise valley in 1918. Here you will visit the
Memorial made of rose granite and white marble, with its semicircle peristyle
opening onto an open-air choir flanked with two chapels, one displaying a map of
the combats during 1918, and the other showing the list of those missing in
action during the fighting.
After this stop you will head to the Compiègne Forest to see La Rothonde where
the Armistice was signed. This marked the end of World War I.After this memorable and moving tour you will be driven back to Paris to your
hotel.
